Architects for Palestine

Tragic Turn

Architects for Palestine (AFP) was initiated in November 2023 with this statement:

“We are architects raising funds for medical aid to Palestine. Offering a design session on your project, any scale big or small, domestic or non-domestic. No project is too mundane. Maybe there’s an awkward space in your house but you think no architect would be interested to look at it. Some architects are interested. Often these situations lead to the most creative ideas. Donate what you can in return. “Love is born a living creature / before it becomes an idea” - Mahmoud Darwish”.

AFP runs on the Instagram platform @tragicturn. The designs have been for ordinary, everyday projects. Around ten projects have been undertaken, all in the UK. Some are for clients who might not normally approach an architect for financial or social reasons - elderly relations, fellow activists, friends of friends.

Projects include designs for awkward spaces under stairs, garage renovations, a garden room, a disabled bathroom, technical advice on planning submissions and Passivhaus, a home office, a kitchen extension, and a wardrobe for an artist. Notes, news clips and poems describing unfolding events in Gaza appear on the design drawings. The project was presented at a talk at the V&A in March 2023.
