TRAGIC TURN/ ARCHITECTURE OF DISAPPEARANCE / FREE TIM YOUNG

Tim Young is a wrongfully convicted prisoner on California's death row. I am undertaking a collaborative project with him through UC Santa Cruz. These diaries document the process. Further information on Tim’s case can be found on https://www.timothyjamesyoung.com/

Tim’s cell at San Quentin measured 4.5’ x 10’. At scale 1:50 its volume is roughly equivalent to a medium sized hen’s egg. The interior of an egg would be a strange space to inhabit. No sense of floor, walls, up or down. Monotonous and scale-less, a sense of floating. Can shapes be happy or sad? I always thought the oval feels like a sad shape.

Twenty-three states have abolished the death penalty. California should join them in ending state-sponsored executions.

Boiling Eggs, Hebron City suburbs, West Bank - Free Tim Young

Boiling Eggs, Hebron City suburbs, West Bank - Free Tim Young

News - Over 400 killed as Israel strikes Gaza, breaking ceasefire. Many killed were children. Israel’s defence minister, said “the gates of hell will open in Gaza".

Recently someone from Hebron, West Bank, sent an image of boiling eggs, as a gesture of solidarity with Tim Young. Today we received these words from them:

"My mind, heart and body operates differently during these brutal attacks. We couldn't sleep last night because of the massive attacks on Gaza. I live almost on the western border of the West Bank, which forces me to hear the sounds of warplanes, aerial bombardment and artillery shelling. Now we freeze in front of the screen, watching the news and listening to the sounds of explosions live. The hope has grown and we opened a crack in the wall to let the light in, but they have demolished the wall on us again."

The horrors of colonial oppression extinguish the light. -SK 18.03.25

Images of eggs arrive from
Rohingya Refugee camp, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, in solidarity with Tim Young! Survivors of Myanmar’s genocide against Muslims, stand up for a prisoner on California’s death row. The photos were sent by Rohingya photographer Abul Kalam, who himself was previously jailed by the government of Bangladesh. Abul said the situation in the camps is very bad, so #ProtectTheEgg is currently taking steps to offer him and his fellow camp residents support.

Tim loves trees. He hasn’t hugged one in 26 years. Artist Tom Bradley sends photos of Free Tim Young signs on trees in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Tom says: “It’s a privilege to take part. And a way to connect to a fellow tree hugger”.

Boiling Eggs, Khartoum, Sudan - Free Tim Young

A woman named Hanan from the suburbs of Khartoum, Sudan, sent a video of boiling eggs for Tim Young. They are trapped, they have no electricity, forces are attacking civilians on the streets, fridge doesn’t work for Iftar, and still she sent. I offered to help Hanan get solar panels. The #ProtectTheEgg movement calls upon me to extend a hand in return for the hand Hanan extended to Tim on death row. From Hebron, West Bank, to Khartoum, the love spreads. Our struggles are connected. Give love and receive love. (SK 15/03/25)

Abolition Means No More War: FREE PALESTINE NOW!

“Prison industrial complex (PIC) abolitionists have always understood the work to dismantle the PIC to be connected to global movements against war, militarism, and colonialism. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen mass mobilization for solidarity with the Palestinian people as they face one of the deadliest assaults by the Israeli military in its history.” Critical Resistance, November 2023
